The NHS in Kent and Medway is reminding people with long-term conditions that this year it’s more important than ever for them to have their free flu vaccination.
Flu is a highly infectious illness which spreads rapidly and even people with mild or no symptoms can infect others.
If someone has a long-term health condition, they're more vulnerable to the effects and could suffer more than most people if they catch it.
Dr Navin Kumta, Clinical Chair for NHS Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s extremely important for people who are most at risk of serious harm from the flu to be vaccinated.
“This includes those with long-term health conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, heart disease and diabetes, who are more at risk of serious complications from the flu virus.
“For example, people with chronic heart disease are approximately 11 times more likely to die if they catch flu, than individuals who have no other underlying health condition.
“It’s vital that they are vaccinated as soon as possible and should contact their GP practice or pharmacy to arrange an appointment.
“GP practices and pharmacies have worked hard to put social distancing and other measures in place so you can have the flu vaccination in a safe environment.”
People with a long-term health condition should have received a letter to invite them for their flu vaccination and can speak to their GP practice or local pharmacy to arrange an appointment.
More details about flu vaccinations and a list of who can have one for free are on the NHS website.
