NHS anniversary thank you

3 July 2020

A message from our clinical chair and accountable officer as the NHS marks its aniversary and the county sees lockdown restrictions easing.

This weekend is the 72nd anniversary of the creation of the NHS. Normally the NHS likes to celebrate its birthday in a very up-beat way. But we have experienced many difficult times over the last few months and as we remember all those we have lost, the way we mark the NHS anniversary has a different feel to years gone by.

We would like to mark the occasion by saying thank you to everyone who has and continues to support the health and care system in Kent and Medway.

There are far too many to name, but we thank each and every individual and organisation who has helped, and those who continue to, during this time.

On Saturday evening, in remembrance of those lost, we invite you to join others across England and place a light on your doorstep and or in a window. Landmarks and buildings across Kent and Medway are also expected to be bathed in blue light as a mark of support, thanks and respect to the NHS.

On Sunday, a final ‘clap for carers and key workers’ is planned across the UK and everyone is being invited to say a personal thanks to a loved one, someone who has helped them, or who has made a difference in their area.

Our anniversary also coincides with the easing of lockdown restrictions.  But it’s important to remember that Covid-19 has not disappeared from our cities, towns and villages. People in Kent and Medway are still testing positive with the virus and some remain in our hospitals fighting this disease that has taken too many loved ones too soon.

If you are out and about, wear a face covering where required, follow the social distancing rules, and wash your hands regularly.

If you are planning on heading for the pubs and bars for the first time in months, please help our urgent and emergency care services by not overdoing it and ending up needing their help.

If you or anyone in your household has any Covid-19 symptoms, please stay at home.

Thank you for your support in helping us to help you.  Getting to the point we are now with fewer Covid cases and greater freedom from lockdown has been hard on us all. Let’s not go back.
