Caring for you this winter

10 January 2025

NHS staff across Kent and Medway are working hard to give you the best possible healthcare this winter, one of the busiest times of the year.

People should still come forward for NHS help but all services, including hospitals, are very busy and there may be a longer wait than usual.

We’re sorry if patients are waiting longer than we would like to be seen or discharged. Staff are working hard to provide timely care for all.

Help us help you – get vaccinated now

There has been a rise in patients with flu and this adds to the pressure in hospitals.

While flu numbers fluctuate daily, and represent a small number of total bed space, it does mean additional demand on NHS services and can also be a very serious illness.

In response, from Monday, the NHS is setting up flu and Covid pop-up vaccination clinics at hospitals in east Kent and Dartford.

Having your vaccination is the best way to protect you and your loved ones. You can get vaccinated at a walk-in clinic, pharmacy or GP practice. More details, including eligibility.

Help us help you – choose the right service

Please make sure you use the right service for you. If you are not sure where to go, use NHS 111 (111.nhs.uk) or visit www.StopThinkChoose.co.uk. This website lists local services and has advice on self-care.

Kate Langford, NHS Kent and Medway chief medical officer, speaking on behalf of the NHS in Kent and Medway, said:

“Winter is always a busy time for the NHS and, unfortunately, we know some patients are waiting longer that they should.

“NHS staff are working flat out to give patient the best possible care and keep waiting times as low as they can. When there are delays, staff always try to keep patients comfortable and informed about what is happening.

“It’s really important people choose the right service for them. Some patients using A&E can be treated elsewhere, such as at one of our urgent treatment centres, or by visiting a pharmacy, where they are likely to be helped sooner.

“Please also have your free NHS vaccine if you’re eligible. Flu and Covid are nasty illnesses and the vaccines are safe and effective.”
